Hydrangea Petiolaris Leaf Bud

Hydrangea Petiolaris Leaf Bud

This week I decided to take a look at the buds on my Hydrangea Petiolaris. They opening early like so many plants at the moment.

It always fascinates me how so much bursts out of a bud, flowers and leaves with intricate structures are somehow all wrapped up in the protective scales.

In this photograph I decided to use photo merge to give an increased depth of focus. This technique uses a series of shots of the subject at different points of focus that are then merged using software, in this case the focus merge module of Affinity Photo. Lighting was quite tricky as the outer leaves tend to shade the centre of the bud. Using a small USB lamp I was able to get a spot of light into the heart of the bud.

Hope you enjoy the image.
